Struggling to sleep? Suffering from insomnia? Mindfulness expert, Neil Seligman is back with a quick five minute meditation for sleep

Whether you’re a deep sleeper or a light one, sleep can be a bit of an up and down roller-coaster for many of us.  But meditation is proven to help, not only if you struggle to get to sleep but also with getting back to sleep if you wake up in the small hours.

Our mindfulness expert Neil Seligman has a five minute meditation than can be done either in bed or before bed to slowly ease you into a good night’s sleep or back to sleep when you wake up. You can choose to lie down for this meditation and then nod straight off (hopefully) or if you choose to do this meditation before bed, then you can grab a seat and then swiftly transfer into your bed. It’s entirely up to you, but the benefits are noticeable either way.

Meditation has been shown to alter your sleep generating mechanism in a positive way as it keeps your body and mind in harmony. As you focus on the ‘now’ moment, you are taking control and allowing your mind to let go and release into a space of warm awareness where you feel safe to relax and let go.

A study published in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal showed that the completion of a six week meditation programme improved the sleep quality of participants as they experienced reduced symptoms of insomnia and less fatigue during the day.
